Emma Turner is the 2019 recipient of the Dr. Florence M. Christie Memorial Bursary in the amount of $1,500. Ms. Turner provided the following thank you letter to be read at Volunteer Saint John’s Annual General Meeting.
“Dear Selection Committee,
I am so grateful that you chose me to receive the Florence M. Christie Memorial Bursary. I’ve had a great time volunteering so far, from being a tour guide at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception, to encouraging middle school aged girls to pursue careers in STEM, to being the Charity Representative of the Computer Science Association at UNB. I think the benefit of volunteerism is invaluable both to the community and to personal growth. Being the Charity Representative for the CSA has allowed me to become a valued member of my faculty, while making great contributions to Fredericton Community Kitchens and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Helping with Cyber Girls has allowed me to make a space for girls in my faculty in the future. Volunteering has also opened many doors for me, including giving me an advantage on scholarship and job applications, and gaining valuable references and connections. I will definitely continue to volunteer for many years to come. Thank you again for this honor, this bursary will greatly offset my costs while I attend courses at UNB this summer.”
The Funds for the Dr. Florence M. Christie Memorial Bursary in the amount of $1,500 per year are held in trust by the Greater Saint John Community Foundation, administered by Volunteer Saint John and awarded to a female post-secondary student with volunteer spirit.
