Rongjing (Jocelyn) Jia is the 2018 recipient of the Dr. Florence M. Christie Memorial Bursary in the amount of $1,500. She spoke recently (and eloquently) at the Annual General Meeting of the Saint John Volunteer Centre. Here are her speaking notes:
“Good afternoon, honorable Selection Committee, Ms. Turner, and fellow guests,
I am thrilled to be selected as the 2018 recipient of the Florence Christie Memorial Bursary. I feel very privileged to be chosen for such a distinguished award.
My family lived in Eastern China before we immigrated to Saint John. When we first arrived in Saint John, we really enjoyed the atmosphere of the city, as it is surprisingly similar to my hometown, Maanshan. Not only does Saint John provide unforgettable landscapes, but it also provides the warmth and enthusiasm of a supportive community.
Living in a different country and learning a different culture has presented many challenges, but as a newcomer, I have received so much help from a wide range of dedicated organizations and individuals. For this, I am forever grateful and this is why it is important for me to give back to the community that has supported me. Furthermore, volunteering has given me many positive opportunities to meet a variety of people, learn more about myself, develop new skills, and even advance my career.
It is my great pleasure to be selected, and I am looking forward to contributing more of my skills and services to our great community – the City of Saint John.
Thank you.” ~ Rongjing (Jocelyn) Jia
