The Funds for the Dr. Florence M. Christie Memorial Bursary are in the amount of $1,500 are provided by the Greater Saint John Community Foundation.
This year’s recipient is Rongjing (Jocelyn) Jia. Since moving to Canada as a single mother she has faced many obstacles including learning a new language. That did not stop her from volunteering her time at the YMCA. She provided services for newcomers including working during the Syrian Refugee influx. Rongjing is just finishing up her business accounting diploma at NBCC Saint John and she is going on to get her accounting degree and CPA designation starting at UNB this fall. She has come to love accounting and she found an outlet to give back with these skills by volunteering with the Community Volunteer Tax Program. The criteria for this bursary provide that it be awarded to a mature female student with volunteer spirit. Rongjing fits that bill to a T. Not only is she an adult learner but her daughter is also a University student!
We are thrilled that Rongjing will be joining us at our Annual General Meeting to be held this Friday in order to be formally recognized.
Our AGM is open to the public and will be held at the Social Enterprise Hub at 139 Prince Edward Street starting at noon.
This award was established in recognition of the contributions Dr. Christie made to the Saint John Community as Executive Director of Family Services, Founding Director of the Human Development Council and first President of the Volunteer Bureau (now Saint John Volunteer Centre Inc.).
