Listening to Ourselves: The Prequel to Active Listening
We hear a great deal about the importance of Active Listening for providing a foundation for effective communication, negotiation and problem solving. However, before we are able to listen effectively to others, we need to listen to ourselves. This noon nugget provides tools to recognize, acknowledge and manage our own emotions, thoughts and position–a critical first step in the process of effective communication.
Facilitator -Dr. Beth Gilbert holds a Ph.D. in Organizational Theory from the University of Toronto and an MBA and BA from Queen’s University in Kingston. Beth is a retired professor from the Faculty of Business at the University of New Brunswick in Saint John. While at UNBSJ, Dr. Gilbert was the Director of the Co-operative Education program in the Faculty of Business and a major contributor to continuing education through the Management Development Program which offered professional development initiatives for a number of local employers. Beth continues to contribute to her community through workshops, individual counseling, and consulting on Respectful Communication. Beth runs a business called Practically Speaking which provides strategies and tools for dealing with topics such as conflict resolution, active listening, effective body language, persuasive presentation of a message, dealing with difficult people, taking interviews, managing “hot buttons”, and establishing boundaries in the workplace.
